My doctoral project carries the title “Exploration and investigation of global island fisheries and their underlying drivers” and is funded by the LGFG (Landesgraduiertenförderungsgesetz). The aim of this project is to characterize island fisheries from all around the world and to summarize their developments of the past decades. Furthermore, the focus lays upon fisheries and their interaction with terrestrial factors, such as deforestation, geography, demographics and socio-economics.
Small island nations can be seen as rather distinct countries, being geographically separated from and therefore less directly influenced by adjacent countries. Furthermore, islands are (by definition) surrounded by water, which makes certain land-water interactions and resource limitations more obvious compared to highly interconnected mainland countries. Based on those assumptions, islands will be used here to acquire a deeper understanding of terrestrial and aquatic interactions with a focus on fisheries.
Data in use comes from different, publicly available sources. One of those is the Sea Around Us database, which reconstructs fisheries data of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) at the University of British Colombia.
Knowledge gained from this research is meant to point out alarming developments in the fisheries sector and to provide knowledge for holistic management strategies for more sustainability in future.
